Simvastatin and Tonic Herbs

What is Simvastatin? Simvastatin (Zocor) belongs to a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or "statins." It reduces levels of "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) and triglycerides in the blood, while increasing levels of "good" cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL). Simvastatin is used to lower cholesterol and triglycerides (types of fat) in the blood. It is also used to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, and other heart complications in people with diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors. Simvastatin is used in adults and children who are at least 10 years old.
About Simvastatin: Before taking simvastatin, tell your doctor if you have ever had liver or kidney disease, diabetes, or a thyroid disorder, if you are of Chinese descent, or if you drink more than 2 alcoholic beverages daily. Do not use if you are pregnant.
Simvastatin can cause a condition resulting in the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. Never take simvastatin in larger amounts, or for longer than recommended by your doctor. Taking too much of simvastatin may cause serious or life-threatening side effects.
What to Avoid While Taking Simvastatin: Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with simvastatin and lead to potentially dangerous effects. Do not drink more than 1 quart of grapefruit juice daily. Avoid eating foods that are high in fat or cholesterol. Simvastatin will not be as effective in lowering your cholesterol if you do not follow a cholesterol-lowering diet plan. Avoid drinking alcohol. It can raise triglyceride levels and may increase your risk of liver damage.
Side effects: Allergic reactions include hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop taking simvastatin call your doctor immediately if you have any of these serious side effects: unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness; fever, unusual tiredness, and dark colored urine; pain or burning when you urinate; swelling, weight gain, urinating less than usual or not at all; nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). headache; joint pain, mild muscle pain; constipation, stomach pain or indigestion, mild nausea; mild skin rash; sleep problems (insomnia); or cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. http://www.drugs.com/simvastatin.html

Tonic-Herbs for Bell's Palsy

What is Bell's Palsy? Bell's palsy is named for Sir Charles Bell, a 19th century Scottish surgeon who was the first to describe the condition. The disorder is the most common cause of facial paralysis.

Bell's palsy is a form of temporary facial paralysis resulting from damage or trauma to the facial nerves. The facial nerve-also called the 7th cranial nerve-travels through a narrow, bony canal (called the Fallopian canal) in the skull, beneath the ear, to the muscles on each side of the face.
Symptoms: May include twitching, weakness, or paralysis on one or rarely both sides of the face, drooping of the eyelid and corner of the mouth, drooling, dryness of the eye or mouth, impairment of taste, and excessive tearing in one eye.

Cause: Bell's palsy occurs when the nerve that controls the facial muscles is swollen, inflamed, or compressed, resulting in facial weakness or paralysis. Most scientists believe that a viral infection such as viral meningitis or the common cold sore virus—herpes simplex—causes the disorder. … Causing pressure within the Fallopian canal and leading to ischemia (the restriction of blood and oxygen to the nerve cells).

Bell’s Palsy Patients: Bell's palsy afflicts approximately 40,000 Americans each year. It affects men and women equally and can occur at any age, but it is less common before age 15 or after age 60. It disproportionately attacks people who have diabetes or upper respiratory ailments such as the flu or a cold.
Prednisone: Is an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive steroid drug which is an analogue of hormones that are produced by adrenal glands. Prednisone is a prodrug, because it is an inactive precursor of prednisolone.  http://allsideeffects.net/prednisone-side-effects/
Immunosuppressive Steroids: for example prednisolone and methyl prednisolone, are useful and are the most commonly prescribed immunosuppressive drugs. Large doses over a long period of time can result in a long and well-known list of side-effects including: Weight gain and raised blood pressure; Diabetes; Osteoporosis; Thinning of skin and easy bruising; Risk of serious infections. http://www.edren.org/pages/edreninfo/immunosuppressive-drugs-for-renal-diseases.php

Prognosis The prognosis for individuals with Bell's palsy is generally very good. Improvement is gradual and recovery times vary. With or without treatment, most individuals begin to get better within 2 weeks after the initial onset of symptoms and most recover completely, returning to normal function within 3 to 6 months. In rare cases, the disorder may recur, either on the same or the opposite side of the face.

Current Research Within the Federal Government, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is responsible for supporting and conducting research on brain and nervous system disorders, including Bell's palsy.

Other NINDS-supported research is aimed at developing methods to repair damaged nerves and restore full use and strength to injured areas, and finding ways to prevent nerve damage and injuries from occurring.

Vertigo

Vertigo is the feeling that you or your environment is moving or spinning. It differs from dizziness in that vertigo describes an illusion of movement.  1) When you feel as if you yourself are moving, it's called subjective vertigo, 2) And the perception that your surroundings are moving is called objective vertigo. http://www.emedicinehealth.com/vertigo/article_em.htm

A balance disorder is a disturbance that causes an individual to feel unsteady, for example when standing or walking. Balance is the result of several body systems working together: the visual system (eyes), vestibular system (ears) and proprioception (the body's sense of where it is in space). Degeneration of loss of function in any of these systems can lead to balance deficits. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_disorder

Vertigo and Meniere’s Disease
Vertigo refers to a type of dizziness, and Meniere's disease refers to aural vertigo, or recurrent vertigo that is accompanied by hearing loss and/or tinnitus. Meniere's disease usually occurs in "attacks" that last 3-24 hours and then gradually remit. The disease involves the inner ear; in those with persisting Meniere's disease, hearing loss gradually develops and there may be tinnitus which worsens in association with an attack. http://www.itmonline.org/arts/tinmen.htm

Causes

This site has audio explanations. You are encouraged to visit the sites for complete unedited content. Below are three of several probable causes of vertigo.
1.      Vertigo may also be caused by inflammation within the inner ear (labyrinthitis or vestibular neuritis), which is characterized by the sudden onset of vertigo and may be associated with hearing loss. The most common cause of labyrinthitis is a viral or bacterial inner ear infection.
2.       Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common form of vertigo and is characterized by the sensation of motion initiated by sudden head movements or moving the head in a certain direction. This type of vertigo is rarely serious and can be treated.
3.        Head trauma and neck injury may also result in vertigo, which usually goes away on its own. http://www.emedicinehealth.com/vertigo/article_em.htm

Symptoms

If true vertigo exists, symptoms include a sensation of disorientation or motion. In addition, the individual may also have any or all of these symptoms: nausea or vomiting, sweating, and/or abnormal eye movements. http://www.emedicinehealth.com/vertigo/article_em.htm

Medications
Commonly prescribed medications for vertigo: meclizine hydrochloride (Antivert),  diphenhydramine (Benadryl),   scopolamine transdermal patch (Transderm-Scop),   promethazine hydrochloride (Phenergan),   diazepam (Valium). http://www.emedicinehealth.com/vertigo/page8_em.htm

How Antibiotics Work

Antibiotics work to kill bacteria. Bacteria are single-cell organisms. If bacteria make it past our immune systems and start reproducing inside our bodies, they cause disease. We want to kill the bacteria to eliminate the disease.

Certain bacteria produce chemicals that damage or disable parts of our bodies. In an ear infection, for example, bacteria have gotten into the inner ear. The body is working to fight the bacteria, but the immune system's natural processes produce inflammation. Inflammation in your ear is painful. So you take an antibiotic to kill the bacteria and eliminate the inflammation.

An antibiotic is a selective poison. It has been chosen so that it will kill the desired bacteria, but not the cells in your body. Each different type of antibiotic affects different bacteria in different ways. For example, an antibiotic might inhibit a bacterium's ability to turn glucose into energy, or its ability to construct its cell wall. When this happens, the bacterium dies instead of reproducing. At the same time, the antibiotic acts only on the bacterium's cell-wall-building mechanism, not on a normal cell's.

Antibiotics do not work on viruses because viruses are not alive. A bacterium is a living, reproducing life-form. A virus is just a piece of DNA (or RNA). A virus injects its DNA into a living cell and has that cell reproduce more of the viral DNA. With a virus there is nothing to "kill," so antibiotics don't work on it. http://health.howstuffworks.com/medicine/medication/question88.htm

It is the heavy artillery when it comes to destroying any type of infection.  When any dangerous infection is present, garlic is the first herb on the list.
