Tuberrculosis and Tonic Herbs

Tuberculosis (TB) is a potentially serious infectious disease that mainly affects the lungs. Bacteria that cause tuberculosis are spread from one person to another through tiny droplets released into the air via coughs and sneezes.

Tuberculosis infections began increasing in 1985 partly because of the emergence of HIV which weakens the immune system so it can't fight the TB germs.

Many strains of tuberculosis resist the drugs most used to treat the disease. People with active tuberculosis must take several types of medications for many months to eradicate the infection and prevent development of antibiotic resistance.

Symptoms & Organs Affected

Although the body may harbor bacteria that cause tuberculosis the immune system usually can prevent sickness. For this reason, doctors make a distinction between:

Latent TB: TB infection is present but the bacteria remain in the body in an inactive state and cause no symptoms. Latent TB also called inactive TB or TB infection isn't contagious. However, it can turn into active TB. An estimated one-third of the world's population has latent TB.

Active TB: This condition causes sickness and can spread to others. It can occur in the first few weeks after infection with the TB bacteria, or it might occur years later.

Active TB symptoms: Cough; Unintentional weight loss; Fatigue; Fever; Night sweats; Chills; Loss of appetite

What organs are affected? Tuberculosis usually attacks the lungs. Signs and symptoms of TB of the lungs include: Coughing that lasts three or more weeks; Coughing up blood or sputum; Chest pain, or pain with breathing or coughing. Tuberculosis can also affect other parts of your body, including your kidneys, spine or brain. When TB occurs outside your lungs, signs and symptoms vary according to the organs affected.

Cause: Tuberculosis is caused by bacteria that spread from person to person through microscopic droplets released into the air. Although tuberculosis is contagious, it's not easy to catch. You're much more likely to get tuberculosis from someone you live with or work with than from a stranger.

HIV and TB: Since the 1980s, the number of cases of tuberculosis has increased dramatically because of the spread of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Tuberculosis and HIV have a deadly relationship — each forces the progress of the other. Infection with HIV suppresses the immune system, making it difficult for the body to control TB bacteria.

Drug-resistant TB: Another reason tuberculosis remains a major killer is the increase in drug-resistant strains of the bacterium. Since the first antibiotics were used to fight tuberculosis 60 years ago some TB germs have developed the ability to survive, and that ability gets passed on to their descendants.

Drug-resistant strains of tuberculosis emerge when an antibiotic fails to kill all of the bacteria it targets. The surviving bacteria become resistant to that particular drug and frequently other antibiotics as well.

Prevention: If tested positive for latent TB infection the doctor may advise taking medications to reduce the risk of developing active tuberculosis. The only type of tuberculosis that is contagious is the active variety, when it affects the lungs. http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseasesconditions/tuberculosis/basics/definition/con-20021761

The control/cure of TB seems to completely annihilate the germ preventing mutated strains.
The “magic bullet” component in garlic penetrates every cell in the body. When a virus cell is penetrated it is destroyed remains flushed from the body. Garlic does not allow the virus to reproduce; there is no chance of mutation. Plus garlic fortifies the immune system preventing future onsets. http://thehealthalert.blogspot.com/2011/03/garlic-better-than-penicillin.html

Garlic is a very powerful antibacterial, antiviral, and anti pathogen substance. It is the heavy artillery when it comes to destroying any type of infection.  When any dangerous infection is present, garlic is the first herb on the list. For any infection, anywhere in the body, garlic can and should be taken internally. http://www.all4naturalhealth.com/anti-inflammatory-herbs.html

Garlic + Vinegar Combined Effects

According to traditional Chinese medicine expert Tom Fung combining equal parts garlic and vinegar is good for health maintenance and medical use. … He also notes a host of other ailments and conditions that garlic and vinegar can help with, including hepatitis, tuberculosis and intestinal parasites. http://thehealthalert.blogspot.com/2012/06/pam-greer-went-to-china-town.html Fung recommends using garlic and vinegar for the preparation of foods and salad dressing and warns that cooking the mixture can remove some health benefits.

The MayoClinic.com website supports garlic efficacy as a healthy supplement they do not endorse vinegar's health benefits other than its possible appetite suppression ability. However, vinegar can be high in vitamins and known blood pressure reducing minerals such as potassium and magnesium. http://www.livestrong.com/article/299170-garlic-vinegar-diet/

Herbal Antibiotic for MDR Pneumonia

Pneumonia is inflammation of the lung that is most often caused by infection with bacteria viruses or other organisms. Occasionally inhaled chemicals can cause lung inflammation.

Pneumonia may be defined according to its location in the lung: Lobar pneumonia occurs in one part or lobe of the lung. Bronchopneumonia tends to be scattered throughout the lung. CAP Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is acquired in the community setting, not in a hospital or other care facility. Hospital (or nosocomial)-acquired pneumonia and nursing home-acquired pneumonia are acquired in those settings.

The Lungs are two spongy organs in the chest surrounded by a thin, moist membrane called the pleura. Each lung is composed of smooth, shiny lobes. The right lung has three lobes, and the left has two. About 90% of the lung is filled with air. Only 10% is solid tissue.

The bronchi divide, like the branches of a tree, into smaller airways called bronchioles. The bronchioles lead to a group of microscopic sacs called alveoli, which look like clusters of grapes. Each healthy adult lung contains millions of tiny alveoli.

Pneumonia may have a viral or bacterial cause. Viral pneumonia accounts for a third or more of community-acquired pneumonias.

Treatment: Ceftaroline, a cephalosporin is newly approved for the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia and the first b-lactam active against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (S.) aureus (MRSA) and multidrug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Better than Penicillin
Allicin the component that gives garlic its strong odor and destroys bacteria and fungi. When crushed, combines with the enzyme allinase and results in antibacterial action equivalent to 1% penicillin. http://thehealthalert.blogspot.com/2011/03/garlic-better-than-penicillin.html

Allicin and its cohorts are very significant...yet the 1/2 life of allicin (the time needed for one-half of a given amount of the component to deteriorate) is estimated to be around 18 full hours. Meaning garlic’s antibiotic properties are able to kill bacteria in-air for about 18 hours.
Inhaling crushed garlic fumes help destroy pneumonia virus and open breathing passages?

Modern science has shown that garlic is a powerful natural antibiotic with a wide-ranging affect rather than targeted. The body does not build up resistance to garlic so the positive health benefits continue. http://www.garlic-central.com/antibiotic.html

The objective of present investigation was to study in vitro inhibitory activity of garlic extract on multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains of Streptococcus mutans isolated from human carious teeth.
Garlic extract is also active against MDR organisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Klebsiella pneumoniae and Mycobacterium tuberculosis . The objective of the present investigation was to determine the inhibitory activity of garlic extract on S. mutans.
Conclusion:
All microorganisms used in the present study were susceptible to the garlic extracts. No isolates were resistant to garlic, indicating that it is a promising antimicrobial agent. The 5% thru 100% concentrations of garlic extract had relatively similar effects, so the 5% solution can be considered for further studies. http://www.ijdr.in/article.asp?issn=0970-9290;year=2013;volume=24;issue=1;spage=71;epage=75;aulast=Houshmand
Layman’s Interpretation:
Garlic kills pneumonia. Right? Regardless of the concentration amount garlic extract inhibits S. mutans, Klebsiella pneumonia, tuberculosis and others

Remarkably garlic also exerts similar activity against viruses, fungi, and parasites. Garlic undoubtedly is a key to achieving optimal immunity and protecting against infections. Garlic was used successfully as a prophylactic before polio vaccines were developed. Garlic has a broader range of bactericidal powers than penicillin. One milligram of its major active compound, allicin, has the equivalent antibacterial power of 15 standard units of penicillin.

Garlic was found to be a more potent antibiotic than penicillin, ampicillin, doxycycline, streptomycin and cephalexin, some of the antibiotic drugs used in the treatment of anthrax.

In 1941, researchers reported that very dilute allicin solutions (one part in 125,000) inhibited the growth of fourteen of fifteen species of bacteria, including strains of staph, strep, and Shigella, cholera. A slightly stronger allicin concentration was effective against all fifteen species. http://www.holisticonline.com/Remedies/Biot/biot_anthrax-natural-rem-garlic.htm

Willow Bark and Aspirin

When symptoms relief is needed would you choose herbal alternatives or synthesized clones?

Consider
  • Fifth century B.C., Hippocrates wrote about a bitter powder extracted from willow bark that relieved aches pains and reduced fevers.
  • In the 1700s, scientist Reverend Edmund Stone wrote of the success with willow bark to cure "agues" or fevers with aches.
With a bit of detective work scientists identified salicin as the part of willow bark that was (1) bitter and (2) good for fever and pain. … [Dr. Frankenstein enters the building]

Acetyl Salicylic Acid, the active ingredient in aspirin is a synthetic derivative of salicin, which occurs naturally in the willow tree. http://www.aspirin-foundation.com/what/100.html

Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. Snoring loudly and feeling tired after a full night's sleep maybe signs of sleep apnea. Two main types of sleep apnea are Obstructive and Central.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea occurs when the muscles in the back of the throat relax. These muscles support the soft palate, the triangular piece of tissue hanging from the soft palate (uvula), the tonsils, the side walls of the throat and the tongue. When the muscles relax, the airway narrows or closes when inhaling, and can't get an adequate breath in. The brain senses this inability to breathe and briefly rouses sleep to reopen the airway. This awakening is usually so brief that it’s not remembered.
Snorting, choking or gasping sound maybe made. This pattern can repeat five to 30 times or more each hour all night long. Obstructive sleep apnea suffers may not be aware that their sleep was interrupted some think they sleep well.
Central Sleep Apnea is much less common occurs when the brain fails to transmit signals to the breathing muscles. Shortness of breath when awaken or having a difficult time getting or staying asleep; like with obstructive sleep apnea, snoring and daytime sleepiness can occur.
The most common cause of central sleep apnea is heart failure and less common is stroke. Those with central sleep apnea may be more likely to remember awakening than are people with obstructive sleep apnea. http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sleep-apnea/basics/definition/CON-20020286

Tonic Herb Remedies & the CPAP Treatment
Do not attempt any treatment without medical consultation.
Garlic helps to relieve enlarged tonsils and alleviate inflammation in the respiratory system making it easier to breathe normally. You can consume a paste of crushed garlic and warm water before sleeping.

·         Balances body systems, Strengthens organs, Weight-loss: http://thehealthalert.blogspot.com/2012/11/power-to-tonic-nutritional-garlic.html#uds-search-results

Yoga involves breathing exercises beneficial in opening up air passages. With regular practice it is possible to control your breathing and ensure proper passage of air in and out of the body.
Indian gooseberry also helps to regulate breathing during sleep. Steep some pieces in hot water and bring to a boil, strain and drink when warm. Grind the leaves into a powder and consume with warm water.
Severe cases of sleep apnea may be treated through continuous positive airway pressure CPAP. This involves wearing a mask over the nose or mouth. Pressurized air is blown through the mask so that the airway stays open. In some cases surgery may be required to remove excess tissue in the throat. http://www.home-remedies-for-you.com/remedy/Sleep-Apnea.html

CPAP machine
Will I have to wear CPAP forever? The answer is...it depends. There are three general categories people fall into that use CPAP: airway architecture, large tonsils, and obesity.http://sleepandcpap.blogspot.com/2010/05/cpap-forever.html

Holistic Approach: Improve nighttime breathing with a holistic approach to sleep. www.sleepworks.com/
Mechanical Devices: The Winx Sleep Therapy System is an innovative home-use device for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults. The system’s flexible mouthpiece allows for uninterrupted breathing through the nose without a mask. http://apnicure.com/sleep-apnea-herapysystem/?gclid=CLm1v5P64rsCFQISMwodOUQAiw

There is no specific Sleep Apnea Diet. Ease breathing disorders by cutting down on foods that are high in cholesterol and saturated fat. Sleep apnea is closely related to obesity; a healthy low-fat diet is important, also helps lower risks of other health complications. http://www.home-remedies-for-you.com/remedy/Sleep-Apnea.html

Foods and Conditions to Avoid Avoid                                                                                                                                                        Bananas a valuable source of fiber and nutrients may increase mucus production and exacerbate breathing problems associated with sleep apnea. For this reason, the University of Maryland Medical Center recommends avoiding bananas and other mucus-producing foods for two weeks to determine whether they are contributing to your symptoms.
Obesity can aggravate sleep apnea; slight weight loss can significantly improve the symptoms by opening airways. Caffeine can interfere with the normal sleep rhythm. Smoking can lead to accumulation of fluid in the throat and can also cause inflammation in the upper airways. Alcohol and Sedatives can cause the throat muscles to relax which disrupts breathing. Eating a heavy meal just before bedtime can prevent proper sleep. Maintaining a steady sleeping schedule can help to reduce episodes of sleep apnea. http://www.home-remedies-for-you.com/remedy/Sleep-Apnea.html

Dairy Products whole milk, heavy cream and high-fat cheeses may also trigger or worsen mucus production. Rich sources of saturated fat whole milk products may increase your risk for sleep apnea-related health risks, such as heart disease. Research at American Journal of Respiratory & Critical Care Center: 72 overweight patients with sleep apnea consumed a diet limited in dairy and saturated fat. Participants showed positive correlation between avoiding these foods and improved symptoms, weight loss, better quality of life.

High-fat meats supply rich amounts of saturated fat increase risks for cardiovascular problems and may trigger or worsen inflammation in your body. Univ. Maryland Medical Center recommends replacing high-fat steaks with cold-water fish like salmon instead of porterhouse and top sirloin steak, bacon, pork chops, lamb, sausage, meat-topped pizza, fast food breakfast sandwiches, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, deli meats, veal cutlets, bratwursts, fried chicken and spareribs.
Refined Carbohydrates are foods high in added sugars such as cane sugar corn syrup, or enriched flour. Unlike whole grains and starchy vegetables refined carbohydrates contribute calories but few dietary benefits. http://www.livestrong.com/article/364229-foods-that-make-sleep-apnea-worse/

Fast Food Made of Corn - “Just the Facts ...”

If you are what you eat, most Americans are an ear of corn. A chemical analysis of popular fast foods reveals that some form of the grain appears as a main ingredient in most items—especially beef.

Researchers examined the molecular makeup of hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, and French fries purchased from three fast food chains in six US cities.

"Of the hundreds of meals that we bought there were only 12 servings of anything that did not go straight back to a corn source," said Jahren, a geo-biologist University of Hawaii in Honolulu.

Corn has a unique biochemistry that allows researchers to identify its signature as it passes through the food chain—from plant to animal tissue to cooked human food. Scientist’s used this signature to see if the contents of fast food matched how restaurants' said their foods are made and what ingredients they contain.

Such details from Wendy's, McDonalds, and Burger King were "vague and euphemistic," Jahren said. The team's analysis, however, told a "very simple, straightforward story—it all went back to corn."

French fries are often cooked in corn oil; cows and chickens eat either corn or feed fertilized with corn. Not only was the signature of corn dominant, it was remarkably homogenous across the country in different restaurants.

Subsidized System: Corn's U.S. prevalence is reinforced by a basket of federal subsidies that encourages farmers to specialize in corn production. This has encouraged the meat industry to base their productivity around corn, ratcheting up the overall demand for the grain. The end result is a food system rife with corn which carries a host of health consequences.

Early scientific literature on people eating corn-fed meat instead of grass-fed meat—a more natural food source—is revealing changing the composition of fats in the human diet.

This shift may be at the root of human-health issues such as upticks in heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, Michael Pollan, 2006 Omnivore's Dilemma. Get the facts on human diseases.

Leaky Cornfields: From an environmental standpoint, the situation isn't much better. Corn receives about 35 percent of all agricultural pesticides and 40 percent of all commercial fertilizer used in the U.S. And since cornfields are "inherently leaky," a lot of these chemicals are lost to the water and air. For instance, nitrogen—which comes from fertilizers—in the form of nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

"The really important thing we've done is highlighted this information gap." Consumers ought to know …. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/11/081111-fast-food-corn.html

Pickle-Powered Cramps

When making decision it’s wise to obtain relevant materials from reliable sources which allow intelligent well informed choices. The same holds true when answering questions.

During lunch recently the question was asked “I heard pickles relieve leg cramps what do you think about that?  Assuming the affirmative, below are questions that sprang from the table and below that is this diner’s response.
  1. what’s in pickles that relieves leg cramps
  2. do organs and other internal parts cramp
  3. would pickles work for all cramps/pre-menstrual
  4. Is it the juice after the cucumber pickling process
  5. What is the pickling process
  6. What does the cucumber contribute - would other foods do same
  7. what other foods do same without pickling
  8. butter, dill, sweet pickle [flavors]
  9. exactly how does it work - physical science behind it
  10. What tonic herbs in pickling liquid [onion-garlic etc.]
The Question: Could pickle juice be key to avoiding debilitating leg cramps and sustaining athletic endurance?

Pickle juice is the liquid substance used to give cucumbers their salty, sour taste. It is usually made of water, salt, calcium chloride and vinegar (acetic acid), and occasionally contains flavorings like dill or “bread and butter”.

The use of pickle juice as a defense against muscle cramps first attracted headlines when the Philadelphia Eagles credited pickle juice with their cramp-free win over the Dallas Cowboys in the over-one-hundred-degrees Texas heat. Rick Burkholder, the Eagles’ head trainer, called it his “secret weapon.” (http://www.mtolivepickles.com/Picklemania/PickleJuicePower.html)

The pickle company Golden Pickle’s claims that its Pickle Juice Sport drink has approximately 30 times more electrolytes than Powerade and 15 times more than Gatorade. It is endorsed by Dallas Cowboy Jason Witten. (www.goldenpicklejuice.com).

How this works: Exercise induced muscle cramps are caused by dehydration from exercising in hot weather and not drinking enough fluids. When you sweat during exercise you lose a lot of salt from your blood, aka electrolytes. This loss of electrolytes can cause muscle cramping.

Cells use electrolytes to maintain voltages across their cell membranes and to carry electrical impulses to other cells; these impulses are responsible for muscle contractions. Pickle juice has a very high salt or electrolyte content. Therefore, drinking pickle juice before exercising could possibly provide your body with enough salt, that your muscles will not cramp.

There is little scientific evidence supporting or refuting the use of pickle juice as a method of preventing muscle cramps.

A Scientific Study compared the pickle juice from Vlasic Pickles to the carbohydrate sports beverage Gatorade. The two beverage samples were analyzed in a food-composition laboratory to determine the amount of salt, potassium, calcium and magnesium in each product. Pickle juice was found to have considerably more salt than the carbohydrate beverage.

The conclusion: Pickle juice can be used as a remedy for muscle cramps. However, the study warns of the danger of ingesting large amounts of salt suggests athletes dilute the pickle juice with a sufficient quantity of a hypotonic or isotonic solution.

Medical professionals believe that salt plays the major role in preventing the dehydration that causes muscle cramps.  However more scientific research is needed to determine the effectiveness of pickle juice as a muscle cramp remedy. http://healthpsych.psy.vanderbilt.edu/picklejuice.htm
