Rx Metformin vs Tonic Herbs for Diabetes

Prescription Information

GLUCOPHAGE and GLUCOPHAGE XR are used to treat type 2 diabetes. This is also known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. People with type 2 diabetes are not able to make enough insulin or respond normally to the insulin their bodies make. When this happens, sugar (glucose) builds up in the blood. This can lead to serious medical problems including kidney damage, amputations, and blindness. Diabetes is also closely linked to heart disease. The main goal of treating diabetes is to lower your blood sugar to a normal level.

High blood sugar can be lowered by diet and exercise, by a number of medicines taken by mouth, and by insulin shots. Before you take GLUCOPHAGE or GLUCOPHAGE XR, try to control your diabetes by exercise and weight loss. While you take your diabetes medicine, continue to exercise and follow the diet advised for your diabetes. No matter what your recommended diabetes management plan is, studies have shown that maintaining good blood sugar control can prevent or delay complications of diabetes, such as blindness. http://www.diabetesmonitor.com/metf-qa.htm

Garlic for Diabetes

Garlic (Allium Sativum) Supplementation with Standard Anti-diabetic Agent
Provides Better Diabetic Control in Type 2 Diabetic Patients,
Pak. J. Pharm. Sci., Vol.24, No.4, October 2011, pp. 565-570

Although garlic was assumed safe and recommended for many common ailments since ancient times, too much utilization of garlic can cause problems. Garlic breath and infrequent allergic response are predictable adverse effects. Reports have also revealed gastrointestinal side effects like nausea and diarrhea associated with raw garlic and garlic powder preparations. In the present study, garlic did not produce any considerable problem in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and only one patient has complained of gastric discomfort.

Abstract: Garlic has been used safely since ancient times as both food and medicine in human populations, but studies of its efficacy in the management of diabetes have yielded conflicting results. This study has evaluated the potential hypoglycemic effects of garlic in type 2 diabetic patients. The study was conducted in diagnosed type 2 diabetic patients (n=60) with fasting blood sugar level above 126 mg/dl to evaluate the effects of adding garlic tablets with standard antidiabetic therapy on blood sugar.

Conclusion: The present study has demonstrated significant hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of garlic when added with standard antidiabetic agent. Comprehensive clinical studies are desirable to verify the effectiveness of garlic either alone or in combination with other antidiabetic or antihyperlipidemic agents in the treatment and prevention of diabetes and other cardiovascular risk factors. http://www.pjps.pk/CD-PJPS-24-4-11/Paper-24.pdf

Apple Cider Vinegar & Diabetes

Professor Carol Johnston PhD, Department of Nutrition, Arizona State University, have published results on the following three studies: Apple cider vinegar before meals, during meals and before bedtime.

Abstract: According to recent academic studies, vinegar slows the rise of blood sugar levels after you have eaten a meal and when taken at bed time, vinegar lowers morning blood sugar levels.

Conclusion: Based on the results Dr Johnston thinks that the vinegar tonic interferes with the absorption of high-carbohydrate foods which reduces the blood sugar rise that normally occurs after a meal. In her words, "The acetic acid in vinegar may inhibit enzymes that digest starch so that carbohydrate molecules aren't available for absorption and are eliminated as fecal matter."

Acarbose or Metformin

" Vinegar appears to have effects similar to some of the most popular medications for diabetes" (Acarbose or Metformin) continues professor Johnston and "Further investigations to examine the efficacy of vinegar as an anti-diabetic therapy are warranted."
  1. Apple cider vinegar before meals.
  2. Apple cider vinegar before bedtime.
  3. Apple cider vinegar during meals for healthy adults.
Questions & Comments:
1. How long taking Metformin and what effect on heart, liver kidneys?

2. If garlic and other tonic herbs work with prescription drugs to lower blood sugar, (Acarbose or Metformin) is it possible to wean off meds entirely?

Elixirs - Snake Oils - Tonics

Tonic Is
Elixir, a liquid that people believe has magic powers, for example the ability to make you live for ever. Snake oil, something useless that someone tries to sell you or make you believe is good. Tonic is a medicine that claims to make patients feel stronger more energetic and generally healthier.

Tonic Herbs Are
Tonics herbs are the highest and most sought-after herbal remedies in many traditional systems of healing, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. These herbs nourish specific cells, tissues, organs, and the whole individual, and are often used for long periods of time.

These remedies help focus and call forth the biogenetic potential or vitality of the individual for use such as supporting the immune system, nerve function or hormonal system. Tonics are very gentle and slow stimulants, and they provide nutrients that the body can use, such as vitamins, minerals, and many other constituents like plant pigments, such as anthocyanins or flavonoids. Large quantities can be given without harm of overstressing cells, tissues, organs or body systems. - Christopher Hobbs Master Herbalist http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/amazonherbs.htm

Bidirectional and multidirectional herbs are called tonics; they are capable of both increasing and decreasing the activity of body systems, thus restoring and maintaining balance, naturally. Tonics do not over-stimulate the body.

The medical community is aware of the fact that many [I believe all] diseases are preventable by simply maintaining optimum health in all body systems. The emphasis must shift from *treating disease to increasing the body’s natural defense and restorative abilities. The “business of disease” is extremely profitable; the medical community is neither ready nor willing to consider change.

Herbal Tonics should be able to:
  1. Restore and maintain balance, throughout all of the body systems.
  2. Able to increase energy through normal metabolic means, not artificially.
  3. Increase general, overall resistance to infections of all kinds fortifying immune system.
  4. Decrease effects of stress and anxiety enhancing ability to perform, to rest and sleep.
  5. Protect from free-radical damage; good antioxidant activity.
  6. Increase the body's ability to build muscle and/or lose weight through burning calories.
  7. Regulate digestion processes.
  8. Ability to strengthen the heart; to reduce cholesterol, blood pressure; blood’s ability to clot in balance.
  9. Target the liver, kidneys, and other glands related to blood-purifying.
  10. Address the lower bowel; run more if constipated/ less if diarrhea.  It’s hard to imagine something that fight’s both at once, there are tonic herbs that do that, naturally. http://www.jctonic.com/include/whatistonicherb.htm

Lupus - Vitamin D Study

A Study - Vitamin D and Lupus

Vitamin D Deficits May Affect Heart Health
Circulation, Volume 117, Number 4, January 29, 2008, pp. 503-511
DOI: 10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.107.706127

In this study, the researchers hoped to establish more definitely the relationship between vitamin D levels and cardiovascular disease. Although this study is not specifically about lupus, it may be important information for people with lupus, given the risk factors for heart disease.

Who was studied?
This research involved 1,739 individuals who were participants in an ongoing observational study in Massachusetts. All of the participants were Caucasian, and 55% were women.

What do the results mean for you?
People with lupus are advised to avoid sunlight because exposure to ultraviolet light can contribute to flares. Staying out of the sun, however, raises the risks that they can become vitamin D deficient. Therefore, it might be advisable for lupus patients to have their vitamin D levels checked regularly, and to make adequate vitamin D levels an integral part of their preventive health program. This is also very important because steroids can cause severe osteoporosis, and adequate vitamin D is critical to maintaining strong bones.

=====è
What is Lupus?Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disorder that occurs when the body's immune system starts attacking its own connective tissue. The condition can cause the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, heart, and lungs to become inflamed. The damage that results from the disease is relatively unpredictable, cycling between flare-ups and periods of remission. Lupus affects women more commonly than men. Although lupus can be fatal, the prognosis is relatively positive, since survival rates are relatively high in the United States. With routine treatment and medical care, it is possible for lupus patients to live a normal life.
 =====è
What Causes Lupus?
The precise causes are unclear; however, antibiotics, infections, stress, and hormones can influence the condition. Other genetic and environmental triggers are possible. In any case, research is conclusive that a variety of factors are responsible for the condition. Women are more likely to develop lupus than men. African Americans, American Indians, and Asians are groups that are highest at risk. Patients given medications like hydralazine and procainamide are more prone to drug-induced lupus than individuals who take other medications.
Discoid lupus erythematosus affects the skin, usually appearing as a rash. This type of lupus can become systemic and can affect internal organs, but in most of the cases, it is restricted to the skin only. Discoid lupus is relatively less severe compared to other forms.

Systemic lupus affects the body's organs such as the kidneys, heart, and lungs. Blood disorders commonly result from this form of lupus.

Drug-induced lupus results from the usage of prescription drugs and causes a condition that mimics systemic lupus. The symptoms of this form of lupus usually disappear when the person stops the medication that has triggered the disease.

Neonatal lupus is a rare form of lupus that affects the skin. It can also affect the heart and blood of newborn babies because of antibodies that the baby inherits from the mother. This type of lupus is not systemic; instead, it causes a rash on the newborn that disappears after several months.
=====è
Lupus Symptoms - Prevention & Treatment
Most common lupus symptoms include joint swelling, arthritis, body aches, fever, and rashes, anemia, chest pain while breathing, sensitivity to sunlight, hair loss, and kidney problems fatigue that results from hypothyroidism, depression, and difficulty sleeping. Even though there is no cure for lupus, doctors will work with each patient to devise a comprehensive treatment plan that includes medications and physical therapy. The medications that are commonly used to treat lupus include steroids and anti-inflammatory medicines. http://www.symptomfind.com/diseases-conditions/lupus/
=====è
What is Inflammation
Inflammation (Latin, inflammare, to set on fire) is part of the complex biological response of vascular tissues to harmful stimuli, such as pathogens, damaged cells, or irritants. Inflammation is a protective attempt by the organism to remove the injurious stimuli and to initiate the healing process.

Inflammation is not a synonym for infection, even in cases where inflammation is caused by infection. Although infection is caused by a microorganism, inflammation is one of the responses of the organism to the pathogen. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflammation
Another simple way to limit your vulnerability to the flu is to avoid substances that suppress immune function or promote runaway inflammation — such as alcohol, tobacco, and sugar. … As for other pro-inflammatory habits, it stands to reason that an immune system overburdened by systemic inflammation would flounder at fending off new challenges.

Excessive stress promotes inflammation and affects the immune system’s ability to respond. … But chronic stress accelerates the normal aging process and may be a prime cause of immunosenescence — immunological changes associated with aging that hinder our resilience when challenged by viruses or bacteria. So anything that helps you minimize stress will also preserve your immunity.
=====è
Optimize Vitamin D Levels
Connections between vitamin D insufficiency and infectious diseases go back to the 1800’s, when people noticed how tuberculosis patients improved when they traveled to a warm climate where they received more sun exposure. Today there is mounting research confirming this link, and molecular geneticists are studying vitamin D’s capacity to stimulate “antimicrobial innate immunity” to learn how it regulates the genes that control our innate immune responses. http://www.womentowomen.com/inflammation/naturalfluprevention.aspx

Question: People with lupus are advised to avoid sunlight … can contribute to flares. Staying out of the sun ...  raises the risk of vitamin D deficient. Could the introduction of cod liver oil and omega rich foods generate sufficient amounts of vitamin D?

Garlic - NOT for Lupus?

If you have lupus … there are certain foods and medications that you should avoid. Two of several substances listed below have shown to induce lupus signs and flares and should be avoided by people with lupus or autoimmune diseases ….” Please visit the site http://www.hopkinslupus.org/lupus-info/lifestyle-additional-information/avoid/ for unedited content.

Antibiotics

Bactrim and Septra are antibiotics that contain sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. They are grouped as “sulfa” antibiotics because they contain a substance called sulfonamide. … They are also sometimes given prophylactically (i.e., to prevent infection), especially in people taking immunosuppressive medications. However, it is very important that you avoid Bactrim and Septra, because these antibiotics are known to cause an increase in sun sensitivity and lower blood counts in people with lupus, resulting in lupus flares. … Perhaps the most frequently used substitute is Dapsone (diaminodiphenyl sulfone) to prevent Pneumocystis pneumonia.

Question: Garlic is nature’s antibiotic. [See: 3/22/11 Garlic-Better Than Penicillin]
During a period of remission, could the introduction of a garlic supplement fortify and balance the body’s organs and systems to the goal of eliminating otc and prescription drugs (lethal) side-effects?

Garlic
Scientists believe that three substancs in garlic—allicin, ajoene, and thiosulfinates—rev-up your immune system by enhancing the activity of white blood cells, particularly macrophages and lymphocytes. Scientists also believe that the sulfur components of garlic help to prevent and suppress cancer in the body. For this reason, garlic is often used as a supplement to combat colds and infections. Unfortunately, the enhancement of immune response is counterproductive in people with autoimmune disease such as lupus, because their immune system is already overactive. As a result, people with lupus and lupus-like signs should avoid cooking with garlic and adding it to food. Of course, a tiny amount of the herb will not harm you, but try to consciously avoid purchasing and preparing foods with garlic.

Question: To avoid the side effects of prolonged prescription drugs used to "treat" lupus, during a remission period, could a garlic supplement be gradually introduced in an effort to protect the organs (heart, lungs, and kidneys) and fortify the body’s systems?

Nutritional supplements may react adversely with prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Consult your medical provider before including any supplement in your health routine.

Gallstones & Garlic

Benefits of Cayenne & Garlic for Gallstones: The gall bladder stores bile secreted by the liver. Bile assists in digestion and absorption of fats, fat soluble vitamins, minerals and calcium. As bile accumulates in the gallbladder, it coagulates and slowly forms gallstones. You experience pain when the gallbladder attempts to push large gallstones through the bile duct. The benefits of cayenne and garlic for gallstones are pain relief, increase of circulation, stimulation of the liver and reduction of stones. This herbal liver flush for gallstones should only be used under the direction of your physician.  http://www.ehow.com/about_5476378_benefits-cayenne-garlic-gallstones.html

Organic Food is Important: The liver is the root of the problem here and the pesticides and herbicides used in commercial fruits and vegetables causes extra burden on the liver and therefore the gallbladder.

Another priceless benefit of garlic … is liver protection. In this regard, many of the studies are on aged garlic. Garlic is a powerful detoxifying agent that can protect against various liver toxins. In an experimental study, garlic protected against acetaminophen induced liver toxicity. This means that individuals who are taking Tylenol® may find garlic beneficial. http://www.starthealthylife.com/page241.htm

What are gallstones?
Gallstones are small, pebble-like substances that develop in the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped sac located below your liver in the right upper abdomen. Gallstones form when liquid stored in the gallbladder hardens into pieces of stone-like material. The liquid—called bile—helps the body digest fats. Bile is made in the liver then stored in the gallbladder until the body needs it. The gallbladder contracts and pushes the bile into a tube—called the common bile duct—that carries it to the small intestine, where it helps with digestion.

The two types of gallstones are cholesterol stones and pigment stones. Cholesterol stones are usually yellow-green and are made primarily of hardened cholesterol. They account for about 80 percent of gallstones. Pigment stones are small, dark stones made of bilirubin. Gallstones can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball. The gallbladder can develop just one large stone, hundreds of tiny stones, or a combination of the two.

What causes gallstones?
Scientists believe cholesterol stones form when bile contains too much cholesterol, too much bilirubin, or not enough bile salts, or when the gallbladder does not empty completely or often enough. The reason these imbalances occur is not known.

The cause of pigment stones is not fully understood. The stones tend to develop in people who have liver cirrhosis, biliary tract infections, or hereditary blood disorders—such as sickle cell anemia—in which the liver makes too much bilirubin.

The mere presence of gallstones may cause more gallstones to develop. Other factors that contribute to the formation of gallstones, particularly cholesterol stones, include:

Sex: Women are twice as likely as men to develop gallstones. Excess estrogen from pregnancy, hormone replacement therapy, and birth control pills appears to increase cholesterol levels in bile and decrease gallbladder movement, which can lead to gallstones.

Weight: A large clinical study showed that being even moderately overweight increases the risk for developing gallstones. The most likely reason is that the amount of bile salts in bile is reduced, resulting in more cholesterol. Increased cholesterol reduces gallbladder emptying. Obesity is a major risk factor for gallstones, especially in women.

Family history: Gallstones often run in families, pointing to a possible genetic link.

Diet: Diets high in fat and cholesterol and low in fiber increase the risk of gallstones due to increased cholesterol in the bile and reduced gallbladder emptying.

Rapid weight loss: As the body metabolizes fat during prolonged fasting and rapid weight loss—such as “crash diets”—the liver secretes extra cholesterol into bile, which can cause gallstones.

Age: People older than age 60 are more likely to develop gallstones than younger people.

Cholesterol-lowering drugs: Drugs that lower cholesterol levels in the blood actually increase the amount of cholesterol secreted into bile.

Diabetes: People with diabetes generally have high levels of fatty acids called triglycerides.

Control Hypertension, Naturally

In a variety of tests, garlic and onions (members of the allium family) have been shown to reduce cholesterol, high blood pressure and the incidence of flu.

Alan Tsai, Ph.D., Michigan School of Health has tested rats and humans for the effects of garlic on cholesterol levels. He fed test groups high cholesterol diets, with one group receiving garlic. Those who consumed garlic had cholesterol levels that rose about 4 percent, as opposed to those without garlic whose cholesterol levels rose 23 percent. http://www.motherearthnews.com/Natural-Health/1997-10-01/Lower-Blood-Pressure-Naturally.aspx

Allicin is responsible for lipid-lowering, anti-blood coagulation, anti-hypertension, anti-cancer, antioxidant and anti-microbial effects http://www.allicinfacts.com/allicin01.htm

The TONIC Nutritional Garlic Supplement is made from the original centuries-old recipe first given to prevent colds and flu. Cause of Hypertension: A diet high in sugar, fats, and salt can cause high blood pressure. The use of alcohol, and caffeine, smoking obesity, inactivity, pregnancy, the use of birth control pills, smoking, and heavy metal poisoning can also be root causes of high blood pressure.

What is High Blood Pressure?
-blood circulates through the body
-presses against the walls of the arteries.
-pressure becomes too high distorts arterial walls
-narrow or thicken placing stress, extra burden on the heart.
-High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of kidney failure

Who Gets High Blood Pressure?
More than 50 million Americans suffer from Hypertension.

Medications & Side-Effects:
-Metoprololtairtrate
-Hydrochlorothiazide
brown/dark urine; death; stroke; organ failure; muscle problems; kidney failure; weakness; nausea
-Caduet, Lipitor, Norvasc
Vomiting; yellow skin & eyes; diarrhea
